Not only did the wine industry suffer in Oklahoma due to Prohibition, but the Dust Bowl of the 1930s also created a huge obstacle for winemakers in the state. Today, however, there is no stopping Oklahoma’s wine industry. The state is currently home to 52 wineries and one American Viticultural Area. Some of the most popular grape varieties used in Oklahoma include Grape Cabernet, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewurstraminier. Wineries in Oklahoma often experiment with fruits other than grapes. Jalapeño peppers have even been used in Oklahoma wines. However, it’s the classic wines and friendly faces that keep tourists coming back for more.
