Vermont is a state that makes the proverbial lemonade out of lemons. The state’s short growing season and often bitter-cold temperatures make for less-than-ideal growing conditions for most wine grapes. Historically, only Concord and a few other grape varieties were able to be grown in the area. However, times are changing and Vermont’s vintners are changing right along with them. New grape varieties such as Frontenac, Lacrescent, St. Croix and Riesling are coming forth that are able to withstand Vermont’s harsh climate. This is in addition to the fruit wines that are made and, even more unique, the ice wines, made from grapes that freeze while still on the vines.
